Morphological-ecological characterization of thyroid diseases in St. Petersburg according to data of operational material and population-based cancer registry

Author: V.A. Krulevsky

Reference: St. Petersburg 2003 WAC Russia 14.00.15

Keywords: endemic goiter, survival of patient, population-based cancer registry

Abstract: Interest in the study of thyroid cancer has significantly always been associated with the problem of iodine deficiency in the environment of different regions of the world. The problem of endemic goiter and neoplastic processes, developing on the background of endemic goiter, made more than one generation of local doctors uneasy. Special interest of professionals of thyroid, including pathologists, was drawn to diseases of the thyroid gland in connection with the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, and other radioactive contamination in areas where there has been an accident at a nuclear industry, as well as in other areas, with a large-scale industry and energy, producing often unreported radiation factor. In this regard, the concept of the program was formed: “The pathology of the thyroid gland as a marker of ecological trouble” …

The purpose of the work: To compare the environmental and sanitary situation in St. Petersburg with thyroid cancer, according to the data given by surgical material from 1982 to 2000., and to analyze data on the incidence and survival of patients with thyroid cancer, according to data of population-based cancer registry.

Improvement of organization of health care for adult urban population with thyroid cancer

Author: N.S. Andreeva

Reference: Dissertation, Kursk 2004 WAC RF14.00.33

Keywords: development of medical care

Abstract: For today insufficient iodine intake poses a serious threat to the health of 100 million Russians [Troshina EA, 2003]. Special medical and social importance of this problem is determined by the following: iodine deficiency decreases the intellectual and physical development of children, disrupt sexual development in adolescence, and, in women, there is a high rate of complications of pregnancy and childbirth [Santa II et al., 1992; Kasatkina EP, 1997; Scheplyagina LA, 1997]. The situation was exacerbated by the ecological disaster that resulted from the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. In the areas affected by the disaster, incidences of various thyroid disorders and, more dangerously, thyroid cancer have sharply increased (in 7,5-15,6 times) [Tallinsky, AP, An-gasTL., 1994, Report AYFEKA, 1995] …

The purpose of the study is to develop evidence-based recommendations for the improvement of the organization of specialized polyclinic and inpatient care for adult population of Kursk with various thyroid diseases.

The value of three-dimensional ultrasound scans in the assessment of the size of thyroid gland

Author: R.S. Bataeva

Reference: Moscow 2004 WAC RF14.00.19

Keywords: ultrasound imaging, endemic goiter, WHO, iodine deficiency

Abstract: The actual problem of diagnosis of thyroid cancer is explained by its high prevalence: a significant increase in incidence of overall growth of endocrine diseases is confirmed in the last decade. According to WHO statistics for 2001, on Earth, there are more than 2.2 billion people living in areas of iodine deficiency, with possibility of inducement of goiter, more than one billion people actually suffering from goitre. This problem became more acute in connection with the 1986 accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, after which growth of autoimmune disease goiter and thyroid cancer began to appear.

Purpose of the work – to identify features of three-dimensional reconstruction method of ultrasound imaging in the evaluation of the thyroid gland.
