Title: FUNCTIONAL STATE OF RESPIRATORY SYSTEM IN CHILDREN EXPOSED TO IONIZING RADIATION AS A RESULT OF THE CHERNOBYL DISASTER

Author: Kolpakov Igor E, Stepanova E I

Reference: Укр. мед. часопис. (Ukrainian Medical Journal) , №6(20) XI – XII 2000 г.

Keywords: respiratory system, functional state, children, ionizing radiation, Chernobyl disaster

Abstract: The purpose of the present study was to assess the state of respiratory and nonrespiratory lung functions in children exposed to acute and chronic irradiation as a result of the Chernobyl disaster. Studies were performed among 1748 children aged from 5 to 14 years without respiratory diseases. The 1st principal group formed 784 children exposed to acute irradiation (evacuated from Pripyat town and Chernobyl nuclear power plant 30-km exclusion zone), the 2nd one — 964 children exposed to chronic irradiation (living in zones of radiation control). 840 children from radioactively «clean» regions formed the control group. An investigation of respiratory ventilation was performed by the method of pneumotachography using pharmacological inhalation test on latent bronchospasm. Nonrespiratory lung functions were studied by condensate of expired air (CEA).

Keywords: brain damage in utero, Chernobyl accident, neuromental health, etiopathogenesis, prenatal irradiation

Abstract: An integrated estimation of neuromental health of children acutely exposed to prenatal irradiation was performed. One hundred children, who were born between 26 April 1986 and 26 February 1987 from pregnant at the moment of the Chernobyl disaster women evacuated from the city of Pripyat after the accident were examined (main group). Doses of fetus irradiation were 10,7–92,5 mSv and doses of fetus thyroid irradiation were 0,2–2 Gy. Comparison group included 50 children from Kiev of the same age which mother’s pregnancies took place in Kiev (doses of fetus irradiation were 0–2,7 mSv and doses of fetus thyroid irradiation were 0–0,04 Gy).

Neuropsychiatric aftermath of the Chernobyl disaster: current state of evidences

Title: Neuropsychiatric aftermath of the Chernobyl disaster: current state of evidences

Author: Loganovsky K N

Reference: Укр. мед. часопис. (Ukrainian Medical Journal) , 6 (68) – XI/XII 2008

Keywords: Chernobyl accident, neuropsychiatric effects, ionizing radiation, brain radiosensitivity, cerebral radiation markers, State Mental Health Care System

Abstract: The neuropsychiatric aftermath of the Chernobyl disaster remain the most important medical and social problem, however their causes are at issue. There is a strong necessity to develop and implement the State Mental Health Care System for the survivors of the Chernobyl accident as well as possible in the future radiation accidents and terrorist attacks with radiologic dispersive devise (RDD or «dirty bomb»). The brain is a radiosensitive organ where its vulnerability to exposure to ionizing radiation is different: radiation brain injury is mainly localized in neocortex, cortical-limbic system and the dominant hemisphere. The neurophysiological and neuroimaging radiation markers, psychophysiological markers of prenatal irradiation and postradiation cognitive deficit are revealed.

Keywords: Physiology, liquidators, adaptive and regulatory and protective system

Abstract: The aim is to establish a concept of systemic response of the human body when exposed to a combination of factors of the Chernobyl accident. OBJECTIVES: In accordance with the abovementioned purpose, were assigned the following specific objectives: 1. To study the hormonal and metabolic status in participants of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant using a dynamic monitoring. 2. To determine, in the dynamic monitoring, the immune status of the liquidators. 3. To study the response of the antioxidant system to complex pathogenic factors of the accident…

Hemato-immunological status of the liquidators of the Chernobyl accident, living in an eco-critical region of Donbass- method for correcting violation

Reference: Abstract, Moscow, 1998 WAC 03.00.01

Keywords: Radiobiology

Abstract: purpose of research: to investigate the hemato-immunological status of the liquidators of the Chernobyl accident, residing in eco-critical Donbass region and to develop methods for adequate correction. 1. To study, applying results of experiments on animals (white mongrel rats), the effect of low-intensity non-lethal radiation on the blood system and the possibility of its correction. 2. To study the dynamics of the immune system and the peripheral blood of liquidators of the Chernobyl accident, working in the mining industry of the Donbass. 3. To study the hemato-immunological status of the liquidators of the Chernobyl accident, residing in the Donetsk region who do not work in the mining industry. 4. To study features of the hemato-immunological status of the conditionally healthy population of Donbass. To investigate the effectiveness recovery of the hemato-immunological status, by means of detoxification and immune-correction, of the liquidators and residents of eco-critical regions of Donbass and Donetsk.
