Abstract: The increased incidence of thyroid carcinoma in patients, resident in the contaminated areas of Belarus, Ukraine and Russia and who were aged under 19 at the time of the Chernobyl accident has provided a unique opportunity for the scientific study of a human tumour of known radiation aetiology. It is important that not only the interests of the patients concerned come first, but also that information is not lost that may inform our response to a future accident, or could improve prognosis for those affected.
