Clinical and laboratory criteria to evaluate the adaptive-regulatory system of liquidators of the Chernobyl accident in remote period

Author: L.B. Drygina

Reference: Dissertation, doctor of biology, St. Petersburg, 2002

Keywords: hormonal homeostasis, liquidator, euron-specific enolase, thyroglobulin, SA 19-9, carcinoembryonic antigen

Abstract: Relationship of parameters of thyroid autoimmunity and hormonal homeostasis, allowing to predict the tendency to nodulation and hormone-genesis change in the thyroid glands of liquidators is shown. In male liquidators a complex clinical and laboratory screening, of osteotropic level, of hormones in the blood serum, was made, to examine the production of proinflammatory cytokines, indicators of mineral homeostasis, and biochemical markers of bone remodeling, revealing the state of the musculoskeletal system after exposure to complex factors of a radiation accident. Comparative analysis of the frequency of cancer in male liquidators, after long time of the accident, with the results of the study of tumor-associated antigens in peripheral blood, is shown to be effective in monitoring the neuron-specific enolase (NSE), thyroglobulin (TG), SA 19-9 and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA). …

The Chernobyl disaster: biomedical regularities and prediction of the formation of thyroid disease in the population

Author: A.V. Rozhko

Reference: Dissertation, doctor of biology, St. Petersburg, 2011

Keywords: biological regularities, iodine, multiple diseases

Abstract:

  1. Medical and biological regularities of formation of thyroid disease in persons exposed to large-scale radiation accidents (for example, the Chernobyl NPP), effects of iodine radionuclides tocreasing levels of various types of thyroid cancer, which is dependent on gender, age at exposure, received doses, as well as cytogenetic features of thyrocytes and their genomic instability, being also determined by the quality and quantity of conducted institutional health care operations (“active screening”).
  2. After the Chernobyl disaster, in Belarus, growth of frequency of cancer and non-cancer disease of thyroid gland was registered. The greatest rise in the frequency of thyroid cancer, primary hypothyroidism, single and multinodular goiter, autoimmune thyroiditis occur among children and adolescents of the Gomel region, undergoing exposure to radionuclide iodine ….

Keywords: fallout, modeling

Abstract:

  1. Methods of instrumental retrospective determination of the type of radioactive fallout (“dry” or “wet”) during the acute period after the Chernobyl accident are developed and used in the field. The maps of contaminated areas of the Bryansk region showing areas of “dry” fallout.
  2. Carries out semi-empirical model for the adaptation of the contaminated areas of the Bryansk region, taking into account estimation of data on the presence of “dry” and “wet” radioactive fallout in the acute phase after the accident, and the data to individualize the value of the absorbed dose in the thyroid gland and to assess their uncertainty. Suggests verification of the possibility of applying this model in the contaminated areas of the Bryansk region. …

The health of children exposed to radiation as a result of the disaster at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant

Author: V.N. Doroshenko

Reference: Dissertation, Koscow, 2005

Keywords: cancer, non-cancer disease, children

Abstract: In the Bryansk region until 1991 (the latent period after the disaster at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant) spontaneous cancers of the thyroid gland were recorded among children. In the period 1992 – 1999 years. thyroid cancer children of the Bryansk region ranged from 0.96/100 thousand children in 1992 to 2.6 – in 1994 and was higher (P <0.05) than data in Russia (from 0.08 in 1992 to 2.6 in 1997), mainly due to the increase of this disease among children aged 10-14 living in areas with a density of contamination by 137Cs above 5 Ci / km. In the condition of iodine deficiency, doses of radioiodine to the thyroid gland by an average of more than 400 mGy make a significant contribution to the formation of non-toxic diffuse goiter in children.

The long-term (remote) effects of man-made iodine-131 on thyroid gland in childhood

Author: E.F. Ryzhova

Reference: Dissertation, candidate of medical sciences, Chelyabinsk, 2003

Keywords: child, iodine 131

Abstract: The problem of thyroid disorders, induced by radiation, has become particularly relevant after the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, where large groups of the population have been exposed to and incorporated external sources of radiation, including iodine-131; to a factor of iodine deficiency joins the radiation factor. Over the past few years in Belarus, Russia and Ukraine, a lot of work on the identification and treatment of diseases of the thyroid has been done, which results in unique information on the problem. The largest number of studies devoted to thyroid cancer (L.N.Astahova, 1996; E.P.Demidchik et al., 1996; E.G.Matveenko et al., 1996). Also of importance in clinical practice are non-tumoral thyroid disease, occurring many times more than cancer. They lead to severe dysfunction of the thyroid, causing such severe manifestations of it as thyrotoxic myocardial with severe rhythm disorders, disorders of calcium metabolism leading to osteoporosis, a violation of the psyche with the loss of interest in life and decreased intelligence, the progression of atherosclerosis in ultimately leads to reduced quality of life. …

The purpose of the work: Identification of the relationship of thyroid disease with an extended irradiation with iodine-131 in childhood, according to a comprehensive survey in the remote period after the man-made radiation.

The assessment of individual doses of thyroid cancer of the population of Kaluga region as a result of direct effects of the Chernobyl accident, methodical and programmatic explanation

Author: E.K. Yaskova

Reference: Dissertation, candidate of biology, Obninsk, 2001

Keywords: exposure dose

Abstract: Review of this literature shows that, although 15 years have passed since the Chernobyl accident, the problem of adequate assessment of the level of exposure of the thyroid with radioactive iodine in the population living in the territory of the former USSR, is still quite urgent. This explains the large flow of scientific publications, presentations and discussions on this subject in recent years, as correct assessment of the initial dose-step in addressing many of the medical, epidemiological, social and other problems. In the Kaluga region the initial dose assessment was made in 1986 immediately after the primary direct measurements collected as a result of radiological survey of the population in May of the same year. In the absence of reliable information about the required environmental parameters of the formation of exposure, dose calculation was carried out by a conservative scheme based on the following assumptions: a single fallout on April 27, the earliest starting date of grazing (until April 27), the presence of countermeasures, from May 10 .. .. The aim of this work – revaluation of individual thyroid doses to the population of the surveyed areas of Kaluga region, taking into account new data on factors of the formation of exposure.

Keywords: non-cancer diseases, cardiac arrhythmia

Abstract: In recent years a steady upward trend in the number of patients with various thyroid diseases, the prevalence of disease among the people of different countries varies between 2.1 – 4.2% [139, 260], has been witnessed. Actuality of the problem is caused not only by widespread of this disease, but also by the occurrence in mainly in young adults (from 18-20 to 40-50 years), and fairly rapid defeat of various human organs and systems [111, 139]. By the end of the first decade after the Chernobyl accident there is a significant increase in the incidence of thyroid cancer, diffuse toxic goiter and hypothyroidism [27, 41, 42, 68, 88, 167]. Considering the relatively large percentage of medium-and long-lived isotopes of iodine in the overall spectrum of pollution, it can be assumed that the problem is to continue in the coming decades. Consequently, the problem of adverse long-term consequences of environmental disasters not only has medical value, but also is extremely urgent social problem. …

The purpose of research: To study the features of cardiac arrhythmia, a condition of the central hemodynamics in patients with various diseases of the thyroid gland, depending on the functional state of the pituitary-thyroid system.
