Morphological-ecological characterization of thyroid diseases in St. Petersburg according to data of operational material and population-based cancer registry

Author: V.A. Krulevsky

Reference: St. Petersburg 2003 WAC Russia 14.00.15

Keywords: endemic goiter, survival of patient, population-based cancer registry

Abstract: Interest in the study of thyroid cancer has significantly always been associated with the problem of iodine deficiency in the environment of different regions of the world. The problem of endemic goiter and neoplastic processes, developing on the background of endemic goiter, made more than one generation of local doctors uneasy. Special interest of professionals of thyroid, including pathologists, was drawn to diseases of the thyroid gland in connection with the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, and other radioactive contamination in areas where there has been an accident at a nuclear industry, as well as in other areas, with a large-scale industry and energy, producing often unreported radiation factor. In this regard, the concept of the program was formed: “The pathology of the thyroid gland as a marker of ecological trouble” …

The purpose of the work: To compare the environmental and sanitary situation in St. Petersburg with thyroid cancer, according to the data given by surgical material from 1982 to 2000., and to analyze data on the incidence and survival of patients with thyroid cancer, according to data of population-based cancer registry.

The radiation risks of cancer incidence and cancer mortality among liquidators of the Chernobyl accident

Author: V.V. Kasheev

Reference: Dissertation, candidate of biology, Obninsk, 2009

Keywords: disease, mortality, liquidator

Abstract: In the analysis of the incidence of thyroid cancer (TC) of the liquidators of the Chernobyl accident, a significant increase in the incidence of thyroid cancer (SIR = 3.47, 95% CI: 2.80, 4.25) among liquidators, in relation to the age-standardized male population of the country, is identified. It is shown that the highest incidence rate of thyroid cancer (SIR = 6.62, 95% CI: 4.63, 9.09) are of the liquidators, who participated in the work of the 30-km zone of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant between April and July in 1986. Statistically significant dependence of incidence of thyroid cancer among liquidators with external exposure dose is not identified. …

Comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of thyroid cancer based on etiopathogenetic and prognostic factors

 Author: P.O. Rumyantsev

Reference: Dissertation, doctor of medical sciences, Obninsk, 2009

Keywords: children, adolescence, histological verification, English researchers, Thomas GA & Williams E.D.

Abstract: … Since 1992 to the present time, in the contaminated territories of the Russian Federation, following the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, were detected an abnormally high incidence of thyroid cancer in the cohort of individuals exposed in childhood and adolescence [BM Vtyurip et al, 2001]. In the late ’90s, for a review, a histogram-preparation of all previously diagnosed cases of thyroid cancer was available for an independent examination by the international panel of pathologists, chaired by Professor Williams (UK). As result of the independent histological verification, in many cases the diagnosis of thyroid cancer was not confirmed, in some cases histological type was changed, or histopathological version of the thyroid carcinoma was elaborated. Since 1999 histo-preparation of all newly diagnosed cases of thyroid cancer in children and adolescents, (at the time of diagnosis or at the time of the Chernobyl accident) born after 1967, has undergone regular independent histological verification as part of international projects of bank of tissue, blood and nucleic acids, whose headquarter is situated in London [Thomas GA & Williams E.D., 2001]. After more than twenty years after the Chernobyl accident, there is no information on the exact number of cases of thyroid cancer (based on the results of the international histological verification) reported of children and adolescents in the contaminated territories of the Russian Federation in the post-Chernobyl period ….

Comparative assessment of indicators of overall level and patterns of disease with cytogenetic indices in children and adolescents living in the contaminated areas of the Kaluga Region after the accident of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant

Author: N.O. Omapaskhabov

Reference: Dissertation, 2007

Keywords: demography, somatic abnormalities, digestive system

Abstract: For the first time, a comprehensive comparative evaluation is carried out of the dynamics of demographic indicators, indicators of the overall level and structure of newly diagnosed disease, as well as cytogenetic indices in child population living for 20 years in the contaminated areas following the accident of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Implements, in the initial -“iodine”- period of the Chernobyl accident, direct measurements of absorbed doses of the thyroid gland (TG) in children of Zhizdra area, allowing, for the first time, to evaluate the observed functional changes in the thyroid depending on the individual doses of incorporated radionuclides of iodine. Determines the role of cytogenetic damage in the development of somatic abnormalities in children with elevated levels of chromosomal aberrations. Especially in prenatally irradiated cases, morphological and functional changes in the thyroid gland diseases in the respiratory and digestive system, are more often encountered. The results obtained in general: Materials of the research formed the basis for the planning of socio-economic measures and medical administration of the Kaluga region in the contaminated areas after the Chernobyl accident …

Evaluation of radiation risk of thyroid cancer for the population of the contaminated areas of Russia after the Chernobyl accident

Author: K.A. Tumanov

Reference: Dissertation, candidate of biology, Obninsk, 2012

Keywords: NRER survey, SIR, ERR

Abstract: The aim of the thesis is to study the dynamics of thyroid cancer incidence of the population living in the contaminated areas of Russia, according to the data of NRER (National Radiation and Epidemiological Registry) collected during the observation period from 1986 to 2008. At the same time, estimates of the basic characteristics of radiation-epidemiological studies were given: the standardized incidence ratio (SIR) and excess relative risk (ERR).
