Abstract: This research note is a memorandum for our interviews with those who lived in Prypiat city near the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. The inhabitants in Prypiat had to be evacuated to other places due to the nuclear accidents in April, 1986. We conducted the interviews with them in order to examine one of several aspects of the socioeconomic and psychological sufferings they endured. The results of our survey show that there are some remarkable damages such as loss of property and home; disintegration of labor ability, places of education and community.

Analysis of focus group discussions related health problems and the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster, among residents of Bila Tserkva

Title: Analysis of focus group discussions related health problems and the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster, among residents of Bila Tserkva

Reference: Journal “Bulletin of the Association of psychiatrists of Ukraine»(01) 2013

Keywords: Bila Tserkva,

Abstract: Recent reviews of the literature, including systematic reviews of the psychological consequences of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant referred to the importance of their research. On the other hand, there is heterogeneity in the methods for study being used and the inability to draw definite conclusions on such consequences and recommendations for the treatment and prevention of adverse effects on the mental health of those affected by the radiation. In order to identify the possible consequences for the mental health and the target groups among population affected by the Chernobyl disaster, we had a discussion in the Bila Tserkva in focus groups with residents of this city and those who were resettled from areas contaminated due to Chernobyl accident. Discussion considered the negative impact on physical and mental health. These data pointed to the serious concerns of the respondents of both sexes and all ages, regardless the status of out-migrants, about possible negative consequences for health, especially in the future. Older immigrants, especially women, even 25 years after the accident showed symptoms of post-traumatic stress. In all group there has been noted the concern of physical and mental health of children and the negative effects of a nuclear catastrophe for their development. Older resettled people still perceive themselves stigmatized by the disaster. Thus, future quantitative studies should clarify the manifestation of mental health in victims of the Chernobyl disaster, requires further clarification of the situation with concern the mental health of children, and the symptoms of post-traumatic stress and stigma among persons of older age groups require urgent response.

Clinical and epidemiological characteristics of alcoholism in liquidators of the Chernobyl accident

Author: Shamov, Leonid Sergeyevich

Reference: dissert. St. Petersbourg: 2004.

Abstract: The purpose of the study is to evaluate the medico-social significance of alcoholism among the Chernobyl liquidators and to develop recommendations for early detection of alcohol dependence and to study the chronic alcoholism. We developed a special “Map of survey, conducted by doctors-narcologists-psychiatrist, on patients undergoing treatment” and guidelines for its management in order to improve the dynamic monitoring of the liquidators to timely conduct appropriate corrective treatment.

Distribution of individual and collective exposure doses for the population of Belorus in the first year after the Chernobyl accident

Title: Distribution of individual and collective exposure doses for the population of Belorus in the first year after the Chernobyl accident

Author: Savkin M.N., Titov A.V., Lebedev A.N.

Reference: Journal: Radiation and Risk (Bulletin of the National Radiation and Epidemiological Registry), Year: 1996 Release Number: 7

Keywords: individual doses, collective dose, Belarus

Abstract: The paper presents results of reconstruction of absorbed internal and external exposure doses for the population on the contaminated areas of Belorus in 1986 on the basis of statistical analysis of the database on radiation monitoring of environmental media, foodstuffs and individual exposure. Consideration is given to the areas with 137Cs soil contamination density of above 0.185 MBq/m2 (5 Ci/km2). A model of basic distributions is proposed which can be used to estimate distribution of absorbed doses for evacuated population and those living permanently on these areas during 1986 with allowance for taken protection measures. The obtained results are compared to the prompt assessments made earlier which were used for decision making and with the features of formation of the radiation situation of the territories adjacent to Russia.
