Abstract: Radiologically-contaminated forest and natural ecosystems contribute significantly to the human radiation dose in the intermediate (several years) and long (several decades) terms following the radionuclide release. As a result of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident in 1986, extensive forested areas in Europe were significantly contaminated with cesium, strontium, plutonium and other radionuclides. This study develops a dynamic model that describes the pathways of radionuclides which undergo complex transfer processes in forests and natural ecosystems. This generic model, FORESTRATH, calculates time-dependent radionuclide concentrations in forest compartments based on the information available on residence half-times. Because of the high complexity, traditional sampling programs often provide only limited and fragmented information for the ecosystem to be modeled. A model-directed sampling program was initiated which implies close feedback between ecosystem sampling and modeling of the radionuclide pathways using the FORESTPATH model. This program is now being applied by an international team of USA, European Union (EU) and Newly Independent States (NIS) members in the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) Exclusion Zone.

Abstract: Describes spatial distribution regularities of 137Cs, 40K, 226Ra and 232Th are identified in the soils in Ozersk (the Chelyabinsk Region). Based on the data collected during a soil survey in 2010. Their anthropogenic and natural accumulation agents are revealed. The average amount of the natural radionuclides in the urban soils were close to the background values. The highest concentrations of 40K, 226Ra and 232Th were found in the industrial area of the town, their anomalous contents in the south-eastern part of Ozersk were characterized by their specific activity values of 450, 30 and 24 Bq/kg respectively. The content of 137Cs was twice the background level; the maximum accumulation of this radionuclide was observed in the undisturbed soils of the recreation area with natural forests where its average content was 164 Bq/kg. The spatial distribution of 137Cs was primarily controlled by the type of land use, 40K and 232Th – by the physical and chemical soil properties, 226Ra – by the vegetation type. The current radiation state of the soil cover in Ozersk was estimated as safe one: the average total effective specific activity in its territory was 17% of the rate, and the contamination density of 137Cs was 7,5% of the maximum permissible one in the Russian Federation.

Keywords: ecological community, plantation, landscape, migration of radionuclides, living biomass

Abstract: Below are presented the results of the research of the carrying-out of 90Sr and 137Cs by the overground phytomass of the fallow lands and meadows herbaceous community of Chernobyl Exclusion Zone (Zone). The radioecological characteristic of the basic cenosis-generative species of the Zone’s fallow lands and meadows herbaceous communities is given. Are made the evaluations of the biogenic fluxes of the radioactive matters into structural elements of the mentioned phytocenosises (alive biomass and laying). The radioecological significance of the Zone’s herbaceous phytocenosis is presented as one of the barters on the ways of the carrying-out of the radioactive nuclides out of the borders of the zone.

Keywords: density of contamination of soil, ecotop, trophotop

Abstract:The studies of 137Cs and 90Sr accumulation characteristics by birch wood (Betula pendula Roth.) growing in different edaphic conditions. Describes the increase in soil fertility from trophotops A to D results in 5-fold 137Cs transfer factor decrease and 2-fold decrease of 90Sr. Soil humidity increase for each grade of trophic net results in the increase of 137Cs transfer factors to wood and decrease for 90Sr. Total activity of 137Cs and 90Sr in birch wood plantation depends on productivity of plantation and on radionuclide transfer factors depending on different plantation conditions. In the most prevailing edaphotops (B2, ВЗ, С2 and C3) birch wood accumulates 0.6-1.2% of 137Cs and 13-19% of 90Sr from total activity of radionuclides in biogeocenosis.
