Abstract:Not much time left before April 26, 2011, a quarter of a century since the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant had happened. In anticipation of this memorable date, the Academy of State Fire Service Emergency Russia (Moscow), arranged a Round Table, where participants spoke about the plans of socio-economic development of radiation-contaminated areas, with emphasis given to the creation of favorable conditions of life of people in these areas.

Abstract: Results of measurements of radionuclide and disperse compositions of aerosols in ventilation system “Bypass” of the object “Shelter” of the Chernobyl NPP are presented. The “Bypass” is used for releasing contaminated air from the destroyed reactor of Block-IV to the atmosphere. In aerosols, the experimentally found ratio of 137Cs concentration to the sum of (β-emitting radionuclides more than 1.5 times exceeds the calculated ratio for nu-clear fuel (in December, 2003). Using the data of meteorological station “Chernobyl”, which situated 15 km SE from the Chernobyl NPP, we found that the wind with mean velocity of 4-5 m/sec or more and gusts of 10-11 m/sec led to increasing the aerosol concentration in the Bypass by more than power of magnitude. With the help of filter pack technique sizes of aerosol particles – the carriers of Chernobyl’ s radioactivity – were measured. It was found that the range of activity median aerodynamical diameter (AMAD) is 2-5 microns.

POST-CHERNOBYL HYDROSPHERE OF BELARUS WITHIN THE RADIOACTIVELY CONTAMINATED TERRITORIES (retrospective review)

Abstract: The retrospective review of scientific investigations of the Belarus hydrosphere within the radioactively contaminated territories is presented for 1986-2005. The area under consideration occupies more than 35 000 km2 with contamination levels 37-1480 kBq/m2 for 137Cs and 22-111 kBq/m2 for 90Sr. Wide-range variations in average vertical velocity (0.11-2.66 cm/yr) and coefficient of quasidiffusion (0.01-1.4 cm2/yr) of radiocaesium migration in soils have been observed. A statistically significant tendency of decreasing with time the radionuclide migration parameters in automorphic soddy-podzolic soils within the over floodplain river terraces was revealed. The levels of groundwater contamination varied within 0.02-0.58 Bq/l for 137Cs and 0.02-0.18 Bq/l for 90Sr. The behavior of Chernobyl-derived 137Cs and 90Sr in hydrologically isolated bog systems within the catchment area of the Pripyat River as well as radionuclide pollution of the water fl ows of Dnieper, Pripyat, Sozh, Besed, Iput Rivers are considered. Dynamics of decreasing the average annual radionuclide activity concentrations and their variations during spring-autumn high water levels is demonstrated. Simplifi ed dynamic model for predicting the radionuclide activity concentrations in the river water following the large-scale radionuclide contamination is considered.

Abstract: «Maximum of activity of the Chernobyl-originated 137Cs in edaphic complexes of the River Vytebet uplands is observed at a depth of 8 cm (437,7 becquerel/kg) and 23 cm (312 becquerel/kg). Based on radiocaesium method calculation wash-out rates had reduced from 1,9 cm since the 1986-1994 yrs. period to 0,5 сm during 1995-2010 yrs. period».

Title: Accumulation of 137Cs by Silurus glanis L. in water bodies of Kiev oblast after Chernobyl NPP accident

Author: Zambia O. L.

Reference:  Институт гидробиологии (Institute of hydrobiology), Kiev

ISSN: 0375-8990

Keywords: Cesium 137, water, cat fish

Abstract:The content of 137Cs in the cat-fish (Silurus glanis L.) of cooling-pond of the Chernobyl NPP, Pripyat River and Kanev reservoir was studied during 1986-2005. The positive «dimensional effect» is registered in accumulation of 137Cs by the cat-fish. The maximal average content of 137Cs (100 kBq/kg) is revealed in muscles of the cat-fish of cooling-pond in 1988. Since then the content of 137Cs in the cat-fish from all investigated reservoirs is decreased. The rate of decrease of 137Cs content in the cat-fish has appreciably decreased last years. Concentration factor of accumulation 137Cs to the cat-fish have achieved the maximal values after 8-10 years from the accident on Chernobyl NPP.
