Abstract: The main purpose of the work was to study the radiological situation in the forest ecosystems of the Ryazan region contaminated by radionuclides due to the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, to determine the levels of cesium in the timber and non-timber forest resources, to assess their compliance with sanitary and hygienic regulations.

Abstract: Chernobyl accident has influenced greatly all spheres of life of the affected territories, changing the life-style of the local population. [1, 2]. Investigation of the radionuclides behavior in natural conditions becomes more and more important which is connected with the fact that radionuclides are drawn into substances rotation and are actively accumulated by the plants and animals, that means that they become integral link of the food chains and are of a great importance in the functioning of the ecosystems. Deposition of radionuclides in the forest system is often higher than in agricultural arrears. Specific ecological features of the forests often lead to the high degree of accumulation of contaminating radionuclides. Organic matter high content in the forest soil and its stability increase the transfer of radionuclides from soil into plans which lead to high content of radionuclides in lichens, mosses, mushrooms and berries. Radionuclides transfer to game in such conditions could bring to the situation when some people actively consuming game meet will be highly exposured

POST-CHERNOBYL HYDROSPHERE OF BELARUS WITHIN THE RADIOACTIVELY CONTAMINATED TERRITORIES (retrospective review)

Abstract: The retrospective review of scientific investigations of the Belarus hydrosphere within the radioactively contaminated territories is presented for 1986-2005. The area under consideration occupies more than 35 000 km2 with contamination levels 37-1480 kBq/m2 for 137Cs and 22-111 kBq/m2 for 90Sr. Wide-range variations in average vertical velocity (0.11-2.66 cm/yr) and coefficient of quasidiffusion (0.01-1.4 cm2/yr) of radiocaesium migration in soils have been observed. A statistically significant tendency of decreasing with time the radionuclide migration parameters in automorphic soddy-podzolic soils within the over floodplain river terraces was revealed. The levels of groundwater contamination varied within 0.02-0.58 Bq/l for 137Cs and 0.02-0.18 Bq/l for 90Sr. The behavior of Chernobyl-derived 137Cs and 90Sr in hydrologically isolated bog systems within the catchment area of the Pripyat River as well as radionuclide pollution of the water fl ows of Dnieper, Pripyat, Sozh, Besed, Iput Rivers are considered. Dynamics of decreasing the average annual radionuclide activity concentrations and their variations during spring-autumn high water levels is demonstrated. Simplifi ed dynamic model for predicting the radionuclide activity concentrations in the river water following the large-scale radionuclide contamination is considered.

Abstract: Introduces the concept of the transfer of exchangeable and non-exchangeable forms of radionuclides into the basin and into the river. On this basis it proposes differential transport equation, allowing to find radionuclides in the soil and their entry into the river at uneven pollution of the basin. Based on measurement data, it determines time dependence of constant flushing of radionuclides.

Abstract: Forty-eight soil profiles down to a depth of 40 cm were taken in Russia and Ukraine in 1995 and 1997, respectively, in order to investigate the feasibility of retrospective dosimetry of the 131I exposure after the Chernobyl accident via the long-lived 129I. The sampling sites covered areas almost not affected by fallout from the Chernobyl accident such as Moscow/Russia and the Zhitomir district in Ukraine as well as the highly contaminated Korosten and Narodici districts in Ukraine.
