Abstract: The method of cleaning consists of infusion of chemical materials into the soil. Topsoil is covered by limestone or dolomite flour (5-6 tons per hectare), with potash KCl, KNO3 or KMgCl 3.6 H2O in an amount of not less than 200 kg per hectare. This process is followed by plantation of mixture of perennial grasses, which are mowed in autumn and placed in storage, precluding the migration of radionuclides.

Abstract: Usage: chemical technology, specifically in the nuclear environment, the processing of liquid radioactive waste (LRW) resulting from the operation of various atomic power plants. Stepwise processing of liquid waste, containing cesium and strontium, is conducted in the following sequence:

>Pre-treatment stage: mechanical cleaning, ultrafiltration, microfiltration

>Passing through selective inorganic sorbent, based on ferrocyanide of transitional metal of copper, nickel, cobalt and porous inorganic carrier

> Passing through reverse osmosis module, at salt concentrations of 1 g / l, in one step. The second step of the same, with flows divided into concentrate and permeate, is then subjected to post-treatment by passing through a sorbent selected from the group of:

synthetic zeolite of type “A”, chabazite of hexagonal structure or natural zeolite of monoclinic structure, which are used as a modified zeolite “CM-SELEX.”

Abstract: Approximately 1000 human teeth, collected in South Ukraine, in 1990–1991, were measured for 90Sr concentration. The teeth were grouped into 18 samples according to the age and sex of the donors. Measured levels of 90Sr concentrations were lower by a factor of 10 than measurements taken in the mid-1960s and mid-1970s. An interesting feature of the data is a 3-fold enhancement of contamination levels in the 25–45 year-old age group of the male population. A possible explanation for this anomaly is that this age group contains a significant number of men who were mobilized immediately after the Chernobyl accident for clean-up operations within the 30-km zone around the damaged nuclear power plant.

Abstract: A study conducted during summer 1993 to determine the bioavailability and transfer of 137Cs and 90Sr to dairy cattle from herbage collected from a pasture contaminated by particulate fallout is described. The study pasture was located 3.5 km from the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. The true absorption coefficient (At) determined for 137Cs (0.23) was considerably lower than previous estimates for radiocaesium incorporated into vegetation by root uptake.
