Abstract: The goal of the study was to recognize the interhemispheric asymmetry effects in appearance of psychopathology in Chernobyl accident’s survivors. Psychometric, neurophysiological, neuropsychological methods were used for assessment of the persons who had been diagnosed with Acute Radiation Sickness (ARS), clean-up workers (liquidators), prenatally exposed children, and relevant comparison and control groups. Also the ultrasonic dopplerography and magnetic resonance imaging with their qualitative and quantitative estimations were done. It was revealed that the damage of the left, dominant, hemisphere is characteristic for the ARS-patients, liquidators exposed to more than 0.3 Sv and prenatally exposed children. The structural and functional features of radiation brain damage consists of the reduction of the systolic circulation in the left internal carotid artery, pathology of cerebral cortex, subcortical structures, neuronal pathways and cortical-limbic system of the dominant hemisphere. This cerebral pathology is the cause of negative psychopathological symptoms, cognitive disorders, depression, and personality changes that are typical in remote period of Chernobyl accident for the liquidators exposed to more than 0.3 Sv and prenatally exposed children.

Abstract: Based on the analysis and synthesis of the results of our prospective study of neuropsychiatric disorders in victims of the Chernobyl disaster, we developed a model of mental health and approaches to psycho-rehabilitation in the structure of preparedness for radiological emergencies. The mental health of the victims should be the focus of public attention regarding possible radiation accidents or radiological terrorist attacks in the future.

Abstract: Physical-chemical properties, prevalence, using, and neuropsychiatric effects of uranium, including depleted uranium, and transuranium elements (mainly, plutonium and americium) are discussed in the article. It is shown the increasing role of these elements in connection with Chernobyl accident and the Shelter Object transformation to an ecologically safety system. In accordance to the recent data on neurotoxicity of uranium it is supposed the same toxicity for the transuranium elements. The neurophysiological examinations of the Shelter Object personnel have revealed the disorders of cerebral bioelectrical activity to be the basis for neuropsychiatric pathology development. Exposure to low and very low doses of ionizing radiation, neurotoxicity of uranium and transuranium elements, stress, as well as other non-radiation industrial hazards were assumed to be proposed as the possible risk factors. The study of biological effects of uranium and transuranium elements are crucial for radiobiology, radiation hygiene and neuropsychiatry. It is necessary to conduct large-scale studies in this field. The Shelter Object transformation to an ecologically safety system is the unique possibility to study of radiotoxical effects of uranium and transuranium elements on the human body. Abstract: Angioneurological features of chronic cerebrovascular disease, in the remote period after total body irradiation in the dose range 0,025-4,7 Sv, are confirmed. As model target, a left internal carotid artery is adopted. Etiological heterogeneity changes of cerebral hemodynamics, in the remote period after irradiation, is confirmed, at which the role of radiation, among traditional risk factors (age, somatic diseases, smoking, alcohol abuse), is shown in doses exceeding 0.3 Sv.

Abstract: Clinical-angioneurological peculiarities of chronic cerebrovascular pathology in remote period after radiation exposure to doses ranged from 0.025 to 3.5 Sv were determined on the basis of comprehensive clinical and neurophysiological investigations, as well as qualitative and quantitative estimation of the ultrasonic Dopplerography parameters in 100 men exposed to ionizing radiation as a result of the Chernobyl accident (liquidators; main group), 135 patients with cerebrovascular pathology (comparison group) and 63 healthy men (control group). A target artery (left internal carotid artery/ICA) and the dopplerographic marker of the radiation brain injury in dose range 0.3–3.5 Sv (reduction of the systolic circulation in the left ACI) were revealed. Disturbances of the cerebral hemodynamics in remote period after radiation exposure are etiologically heterogenous; along with general risk factors (age, alcohol abuse, tobacco smoking, somatic pathology) a role of radiation factor was determined at doses exceeded 0.3 Sv. A dose–effect relationship was revealed towards the reduction of the systolic circulation in the left ICA in liquidators irradiated by 0.3–3.5 Sv and without bad habits and liver pathology.
